What information should I share with school?

Is extra help needed for your child? Then the school needs information. They want to explore what the best help is. Three examples:

  • The school can ask to reports from
  • The school may ask if they can contact the child care center or the old school. There they then request information about your
  • The school may also ask if they may consult with your child’s or family’s health care provider.

All this is allowed only with your permission. You can ask questions of the school about this first, such as:

  • Why do you need this information?
  • Those can the later all read it?

Do you mind giving the entire report of an investigation to school? For example, because it also contains information about others? Then you can also give a portion. For example, only the summary and the opinion.

What is a warm transfer?

Sometimes the elementary school asks for information about your child from the daycare or old school. That way they can better help your child. They may also ask your permission to meet with the leader or teacher your child already knows.

This is called a warm transfer. This often happens, but it is not mandatory. The school must provide information in the educational report. Other information the school may request or share only with your permission. You must then know exactly what information is involved. Don’t just say yes or no, but do remember that good information helps the school provide appropriate education. So working well with the school is important.

Should I also give reports of examinations to the school?

Sometimes the school asks for your child’s records. For example, a report of an examination or treatment. The school may only read this if you give permission. Don’t just say yes or no. Think carefully about what information is needed for school.

You can ask questions first, such as:

  • Why do you need this information?
  • Who will all soon be able to read it?

Do you mind giving the entire report of an investigation to school? For example, because it also contains information about others? Then you can also give a part, for example just the summary and the opinion.

Remember that good information helps the school provide appropriate education. It is important to work well with the school.

With whom may school discuss information about my child?

The school administration, teachers and parents may view and discuss together data about a child. Also, the Education Inspectorate may always ask for information about children. This allows them to examine whether a school is doing a good job.

If you have given the school permission to request additional support from SPPOH, the school may also share data with SPPOH.

If the school wants information from your child’s health care provider, your permission is always required. For example, information from a dyslexia practitioner. So your permission is also required if the school asks for an examination and even pays for it.

You as a parent may always be the first to read the report after the examination. And you decide whether school can see this too. And whether the researcher may discuss it with school.

If your child goes to another school, the school prepares an educational report (OKR). The school shares this with you. That way you know what information the new school gets. Do you disagree with the OKR? Then ask school if they will add this.

May I ask school for information about my child?

The school keeps information about your child. Especially if he or she gets extra help. As a parent, you may always request the information from the student tracking system, student file and developmental perspective plan (OPP).

You can ask about this at school. By law, you have the right to a copy of all information held about your child.

The school and SPPOH work with Education Transparent (OT). This is a digital platform. The school invites you as a parent through OT. You can then read along in your child’s file. Ask about this at school.

I disagree with information in my child’s file. What can I do?

As a parent, you may request the records the school keeps about your child. Is there anything in it that you think is incorrect? Then you can ask that the school remove, add to or correct the information. The privacy law states that.
